Debt diary highlights misconceptions about freelancing

Following the publication of Sayara Beg’s debt diary on the BBC online news website, the Professional Contractors Group (PCG) says that her story highlights some of the misconceptions surrounding freelancing. Mrs Beg, 36, describes herself as a freelance IT consultant.

In one of her diary entries, she wonders “whether I can sue my former employer on grounds of sex discrimination. I had my freelance contract terminated after revealing I was pregnant.”

PCG chief executive John Thomas said, “Without knowing the full details of Mrs Beg’s circumstances, we cannot comment on her plight or offer her specific advice, but if she genuinely operates as a freelancer, then her seeming confusion about employment rights and the language she uses gives us cause for concern, given the number of people who may read her comments on the BBC website.
