Do you get a decent contract rate for the job?

Are you earning enough money for the work you do? How do you know? Do you know the going rate in your speciality area?

When you go from permanent jobs to contracting, you often don't know what the going rate is for the work you do. For example, in IT, the average is 40-60 pound per hour, but in specific specialities, it's a lot higher.

Web- and mobile phone-related specialities are quite highly paid today. Management- level work is of course well-rewarded. Database and related have been hot until recently, but supposedly there's been a decline. Have you experienced anything like that? Has the current slowdown in the City, where most contractors work, had any effect on you?

How do you ensure you get a fair rate for your work?
