Have Your Say: What is your biggest contracting problem?

Contractors Handbook

Contractors, what is your biggest problem at work?

Many contractors have problems with agencies : they can pay late, try to reduce your fee, make renewing contracts difficult. Agents aren't on your side, of course, they're just trying to make as much money as they can. This often leads to friction, as your interests may not be the same as theirs.

But you could also have problems with the client who wants more than the contract includes. Clients can be too pushy, or they can try to terminate you early when they decide they don't need you any longer. And you could also have problems with accountants or lawyers who aren't doing their job. And there is always the tax man...

Why don't you share your problems with the rest of us?

For me, the major pain in contracting is having to prove oneself from scratch again at the start of each new contract. The whole "Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing" thing.

Being on a daily rate and getting pressured by the client and other permies to work 50+ hours per week - just because they do. They seem to think a lack of planning on their part represents an emergency on mine.

The perils of selling ones contracting soul to the banks. Never again!

Agents! Everytime I use them I feel I've been slimed on and have to take a shower!

Its very annoying to work with lazy contractors who give the rest of us a bad name - if you want to be in the same contract for 5 years take a permie role!
