Have Your Say: Do you need help with contracts?

Contracts determine how we work, yet we don't all know much about them. Do you know if you're allowed to terminate your contract early? Is your project well-defined? Do clients get you to do a lot of stuff that 's not in there?

Your contract should state very specifically what you are to do. It should be clear that you decide how and where to do it. Look to our dedicated legal section for lots of specific contract advice.

But there are often problems with contracts. Clients demand more than what they describe, asking you to do two jobs for the price of one. Sometimes agents try and get you to change terms right in the middle of the job.

What contract-related challenges have experienced and how were they resolved?

It never ceases to amaze me some of the rubbish contracts agencies present contractors. I always get mine checked by a lawyer before signing, and everytime there have been things that need changing. My tip - don't try and be your own lawyer!

Once, for political reasons a client wanted to demote me from team leader, to team member - to let a permie get promoted in my place. It was my cast iron schedule that prevented them from doing this. To achieve this they would have had to renegotiate new terms which I would never have agreed to, or just give me 30 days notice - and the project would have been damaged. They didn't get their way thanks to the contract.
