Have Your Say: Do you want employment rights?

IR35 Test

The European Union is in the process of pushing through the Agency Workers Directive, which could force us all to accept employment rights. But do we want these rights?

The unions here in the UK want this too, since that will make contractors more expensive and they hope we will all go away.

The fact is, most of us are used to taking care of our own employment rights, and we don't need Brussels to force them on us. Being a contractor means taking holidays when you want, and taking care of your own illness and pension requirements. We're all grown up: we don't need to be treated like employees, and we became contractors so that we could manage our own affairs.

Do you want employment rights? Do you want to be forced to accept them? How do you feel?

Thumbs down to employment rights. If I'm rubbish then fire me. If I'm great then show me the big paycheck!

Grandfather died at 57 and father died at 67. Government say work until pension kicks in. I want my money to spend now on my kids not for the government to steal it after I'm dead and before I've managed to recoup what I've paid into a pension. I'm big enough to organise my own holiday pay don't need or want Big Brother to look after me. Agree with previous comment: "if I'm rubbish fire me if I'm good show me the big bucks now".

I don't think I ever benefitted from employment rights during my many years as employee. You don't have them all until you have been in a job for a year and then there is the probationary period. As a contractor you have much more control over your career and even a low contract rate more than makes up for this so called loss. I agree that I would rather get the cash than empty promises of security and protection.

Over the last 5 years particular during the recession most employers that have been downright abusing the system for IT contractors. Changing the job spec midway through the contract, making false promises, requiring the contractor to work long hours and refusing to pay them for it. Any complaint and the contract was cancelled and you received a bad reference, in effect you were black listed. Contract work has had its day and I think the economic benefit to both the contractor and the business employing the contractor is exggarated. Legislation is now needed to equalise the rights.
