Dear Contractor,
Welcome to the December 2007 edition of our Contractor NewsCast. An EU debate today could see UK contractors being given the same employment rights as permanent staff – potentially resulting in 250,000 UK jobs being lost. This is bad news for contractors. Ironically, a court decision this week could deprive contractors of chances of obtaining any employment rights. Obviously this would be overridden by EU legislation, but that’s a while away yet. On a brighter note we could see the Revenue becoming financially accountable for mistakes they make. In our features we look at how you must keep at arms length with your client to avoid IR35, and also clarify the expenses you can claim when renting a property near the workplace. Contractor Doctor explains how you can legally claim damages from a client that cancels a contract at the last minute.
